Antioxidants and the heart

The scientific community has long studied antioxidants. While a diet rich in antioxidants is a great way to support total wellness, the nutrients also specifically support the heart.

The word “antioxidant” literally means “anti-oxidant,” meaning it’s combating the impact of oxidation on the body. Oxidation is a process caused by free radicals that damage the cells, and antioxidants can help fight that free radical damage. To support the heart with antioxidants, I recommend making sure you’re getting plenty of flavonoids.

Why flavonoids?

Flavonoids are a subclass of polyphenols (a powerful type of antioxidant) and are produced in plants. They are the colors in fruits and vegetables that protect plants from disease. In plants—and in us—they function as antioxidants. Foods like berries, cocoa, pomegranate and green tea are all rich in flavonoids.

In addition to eating flavonoid-rich foods, you can also drink green tea. Herbalife’s new Green Tea supports the body’s antioxidant activity and protects against free radical damage—all with zero calories. I also recommend any of the products in the Herbalife cardio line, especially Niteworks®, which contains antioxidant vitamins C and E.

The bottom line: Your heart needs support to keep it functioning optimally. That’s why it’s so important to eat a healthy, balanced diet. And it’s also smart to add a targeted supplement to fill in nutritional gaps when they occur.
