28 Days of Heart HealthWith 2016 we have ushered in a new year, and now in February a renewed focus on our hearts.  You may be young and seemingly healthy, so why should you care about heart health??  Because the statistics are shocking.  According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) 11.3% of adults in the United States have been diagnosed with heart disease, 32.5% with hypertension and 8.9% with Diabetes.  We may be leading the world in these “lifestyle diseases” but we are not alone.  Unfortunately much of the world has similar statistics.

We know that overweight and inactivity contribute to these maladies.  By 2012 69.9% of Americans were found to be overweight or obese, with 35.1% of these obese.  In addition more than 50% of adults do not meet the government Physical Activity Guidelines for aerobic activity.  Finally, most Americans eat more salt, fat, and refined sugar and grains than they should, and not enough fruits and vegetables.

So, yes, the statistics are a “call to action”.  The good news is that you are in control, and simple changes can make a big difference in your life.  Let’s use February and the New Year to explore ways to become healthier.
