Nutrients that Support Nitric Oxide Production
Most research on Nitric Oxide focuses on its health-supporting benefits in the human body, especially in the cardiovascular system. Among other crucial functions, NO helps support healthy blood pressure levels while keeping the arteries youthful and elastic. This key molecule is naturally produced in the body by the endothelium from the amino acid L-arginine and supported by the additional presence of L-citrulline. While these two amino acids are vital, let’s focus on some of the nutrients that are known to support a healthy endothelium: vitamin C, vitamin E, alpha lipoic acid and folic acid.
Most everyone has heard of antioxidants and their benefits in protecting the cells and DNA from the damaging effects of free radicals. Antioxidants function throughout the body and play a specific role in the NO story. By battling the negative effects of free radicals, antioxidants can actually support the health of the NO-producing endothelial cells that line the arteries.
Niteworks® is formulated with three very important antioxidant nutrients: vitamin C, vitamin E and alpha lipoic acid.
- Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant that has been shown to support endothelial function and cardiovascular health. By promoting endothelial function and providing general antioxidant support against free radicals, vitamin C supports NO production.
- Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that works in conjunction with vitamin C. It helps stabilize and protect the membranes of endothelial cells from free radical damage.
- Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is both a water- and fat-soluble antioxidant. It provides general antioxidant support against free radicals and support glutathione production, a naturally-occurring antioxidant in the body.
In addition to a potent combination of NO-promoting antioxidants, Niteworks® also contains folic acid. Folic acid is a member of the B vitamin complex and important in supporting vascular health. While there are many nutrients important to healthy functioning of the cardiovascular system, these nutrients all support a healthy endothelium and optimal production of NO.
